6 Guidance for reviews of all-through, secondary, and large primary schools
Inclusion Reviews
The 'Leading inclusion' meeting
The 'Leading inclusion' meeting should be attended by the Headteacher/Principal, alongside other
selected senior leaders (as decided by the Headteacher/Principal)
The Headteacher/Principal should present their evaluation of inclusion at the school, using their
completed pre-review self-evaluation as a basis for discussion (see appendix 1). The team will ask
questions, using the table on pages 6-7 as a prompt.
The review team lead must ensure there is time set aside at the end of this meeting for a brief team
discussion prior to undertaking the rest of the review.
Selecting representative groups for certain meetings
For many of the scheduled meetings, school leaders can identify the most appropriate attendees
.However, to ensure that the review includes a broad, cross-section of the school community, the
following parameters should (wherever possible) be followed for the specific panels outlined below:
Panel Notes
Teachers/support staff This group should have an equal mix of teaching and support staff. It
should contain staff with a range of experience.
Other relevant leaders These groups should be made-up of leaders\responsibility holders who
have responsibilities relating to the relevant pillar
Parents (engaged) This group can be left to leaders' discretion. The meeting may be held
on or off site, virtually or by phone call.
Parents (hard to reach) This group may include parents of pupils who might have low
attendance, have been suspended, or who are otherwise deemed by
leaders to be hard to reach. Leaders should provide a rationale for the
selection. The meeting may be held on or off site, virtually or by phone
call. Consideration should be given to the fact that on-site meetings
may not be the most appropriate venue for this session.
Pupils Within the pupil groups, one group should be made-up of 'hard to reach'
pupils, and one should contain pupils with responsibility. All other groups
should be made-up of a representative sample of pupils.
Structured team catch-ups
Brief team catch-ups should be scheduled during the day for the team to come together and discuss
review activity. It is important not to draw any conclusions at this point, but to use these meetings as
an opportunity to reflect and to inform next steps.
Concerns
If any concerns or issues arise during the review, they should be addressed in conversation between
the review team lead and the Headteacher/Principal.
