4 Guidance for reviews of all-through, secondary, and large primary schools
Inclusion Reviews
Inclusion review process
Before the review
The review team lead and the Headteacher/
Principal will agree the plan for the day at least
10 working days before the review. The school's
SEP may be invited to attend this meeting. If
not, the review team lead should try to have
a brief conversation with the SEP prior to this
meeting.
As well as scheduling the activities identified
below, co-constructed activities can also be
agreed with school leaders (for example,
where leaders have areas that they feel are a
particular strength or where they know they
need extra support/scrutiny). Where relevant,
the impact of TPP and/or the Inclusion
Framework should be explored through the
routine review activities. The review team lead
should make a note of any key points from
this conversation in the pre-review briefing pro
forma (Appendix 2 or 3).
Leaders should complete the pre-review selfevaluation
in advance of the review and share
this with the review team lead at least five
working days before the review.
Prior to the review, the review team lead should
complete an inclusion-related pre-review
briefing for the review team (see Appendices
2 and 3). This could include reviewing the
school website (e.g., curriculum, pastoral care,
participation, stakeholder engagement, etc.),
any available data (e.g., attendance, EHE,
suspensions, mid-year admissions, etc.) and
any concerns raised with ECC.
The review team lead must convene a prereview
meeting in advance of the review to
share the briefing with the team and discuss
the plans for the day. In addition to inviting
the review team and the relevant SEP/IP, the
relevant Head of Education and Assistant
Director must be sent an optional invitation.
During the review
Review team deployment
The review team will be deployed as follows:
y the whole review team will undertake the initial 'Leading Inclusion' meeting with the
Headteacher/Principal and senior leaders
y following this, the review team will split into three sub-groups, each allocated to one of the
three pillars
y each sub-group will then undertake a range of activities. Some of their activities will focus on
just their pillar, other activities will have a wider focus
y 45 minutes should be set aside for the initial 'Leading Inclusion' meeting
y all other meetings should be allocated 30 minutes
y reviewers will be provided with prompt questions for all sessions
y reviewers should aim to use all questions to ensure that reviews are undertaken consistently.
However, as the review progresses, reviewers may choose to spend longer exploring some
questions than others
